Trout in the Classroom
In-Classroom Program (with Field Trip)
Grade Level: elementary-school, middle-school, high-school, college
About: Trout in the Classroom is a hands-on project that allows students to raise trout in their classroom while learning about topics related to the trout and their role in the ecosystem such their life cycle, stream habitats, and human impacts on the environment, and finally releasing the trout fingerlings into an approved stream in the Dan River basin.

Time: 5-6 months (October – March or December – April/May)
Grade Level/Curriculum Requirement: All grades
Objective:
- Students will experience the trout life cycle from eggs to fingerlings
- Students will monitor water quality of the trout tank through various parameters
- Students will investigate and understand that humans impact the environment
- Engage in stream habitat and ecosystem studies
- Appreciate water resources and foster a conservation ethic

Procedure: Sign up for DRBA’s Trout in the Classroom program in the late summer or early fall by completing the DRBA Environmental Education Request Application on our For Educators Page on our website. Download the Trout in the Classroom Manual to use along with your in-classroom lessons and activities. Join the Live Stream Virtual Trout in the Classroom on a weekly/daily basis to see the growth and life cycle changes of the trout along with water changes, feeding, and weekly updates.
