Description: Class I - Class II+ (classifications will change depending on generation flow levels from Philpott Dam.

Tips: The Smith River can be floated at any water level but this section is best paddled with a release of water from the Philpott dam. Paddlers and fishermen can expect river levels of 45 to 65 cfs during times of no generation, increasing to 1400 cfs during generation. The water during a release can be as cold as 45 degrees and extremely swift. Paddlers should be prepared for cold water and know their paddling abilities. The ramp on the Henry County side is rustic and water levels are subject to rapid change due to releases from Philpott Dam. Water temperature is cold year round and hypothermia is a danger even in the summer months, dress appropriately and be prepared. A generation schedule can be obtained by calling (276)629-2432. Plan your float or fishing trip accordingly. Boating during high water levels should be timed to coincide with generation schedules, putting on the water too soon or too late will cause the paddler to outrun or "lose" the water. If putting in at the Dam, allow one hour minimum after the start of generation for the water to increase levels downstream.
