The Dan River
Basin Association promotes the rivers for
multiple uses, including recreation and
commercial and municipal growth. We believe
that, with careful planning, natural and
cultural preservation and economic
development can occur hand-in-hand. The
unspoiled rivers, the region’s unique and
greatest resource, will be at the center as
the sixteen counties of the Basin build a
diverse economy, which must be based in part
on new ideas.
Rivers of
Life
Our rivers are our heritage and they are
life-sustaining. The human body is from 50
to
70% water, and that water comes from our
rivers. But our rivers need attention. To take care of our rivers, we need to take
care of the land that surrounds them!
Clean and
healthy water for drinking, fishing or
swimming or good habitat for wildlife,
depends on good vegetative cover (trees and
shrubs) and minimization of the impacts of
land-disturbing activities (such as
timbering, farming, or construction) to
ensure that mud and other pollutants are not
washed into the rivers by rainfall.
A
Solution: Streamside Wooded Buffers
Trees along the shoreline are a waterway’s
best and last defense against pollution. The
Dan River Basin Association is launching a
new initiative to share information about
the benefits of forested streamside areas.
DRBA has applied for funding to develop
educational materials specifically designed
for the Dan River watershed and to conduct
streamside plantings in local communities.
Adopt
a Trail Program
Make a difference in your community and
volunteer! The Dan River Basin Association
has worked with community partners to
develop an Adopt-a-Trail program so that
groups, families, and individuals can help
create and enhance trails around the Dan
River basin. Volunteering for this program
is both fun and rewarding!

Other
Activities
DRBA maintains river accesses by keeping
them clear of trash and mud, organizes river
clean ups and participates in other
stewardship activities. |
